Summary

Introduction. Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis affects people of different ages. The morbidity of tuberculosis between fertile age and pregnant women is increasing in all over the world. As a result, the probability for the new born to get the disease from his mother or other close house hold is also increasing. Although the incidence of tuberculosis in Lithuania is declining, the country remains among the leaders in the European Union. The examination and taking care of the new born after birth in a case of mother’s tuberculosis vary slightly from country to country. The most important aspects of the postnatal examination of the neonate with a positive epidemiological tuberculosis anamnesis are the evaluation of its health, evaluation of the indications for prophylactic protective treatment and for BCG vaccination.

Case presentation. Two clinical cases are described in this article. First one represents the examination and treatment of the new born with a positive epidemiological tuberculosis anamnesis between his close house holds after birth. Second one demon strates the investigation, treatment, and follow-up plan in case of suspicion of congenital tuberculosis. Described clinical cases in this article have revealed that real situations are often different and need the supervision of a professional doctor – pediatric pulmonologist.

Conclusions. The early diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis between pregnant women and their house holds can let us prevent serious forms of congenital or acquired tuberculosis between new borns. As a result, this will have a huge positive impact on the new born’s health in their future.
