Summary
Background. According to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics the increasing relative incidence of childhood tuberculosis (TB) started declining only for the last two years. The most frequent forms of childhood TB are classical primary complex and mediastinal node TB. Even in a country where TB is not scarce, extrapulmonary TB is a rare sight indeed and the accurate diagnosis of childhood TB remains a major challenge.
Psoas muscle abscess is a rare condition in clinical practice. It occurs with diabetes, urogenital tract neoplasia or with severe immunodeficiency. Sometimes opening skin fistula is developing in the area of tissue infiltration. Computerized tomography with intravenous contrast material is a perfect initial examination to prove a soft tissue tract along the fistula and extent of inflammation.
On 27 May, 2010 a centennial anniversary since the death of the famous German bacteriologist Robert Koch was celebrated. He contributed to the discovery of tuberculosis bacilli and in 1905 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
Diseases of the respiratory system are the most common disorders in daily clinical practice in Lithuania. Infectious disorders are the most common of them. So, it is very important to diagnose these diseases properly, to have competence to evaluate results of investigations critically, to known methods of their prevention.
