Summary

Introduction. The Complete Blood Count (CBC) is an important diagnostic tool for every physician. Neutrophils are immune system cells responsible for defense against bacterial and fungal infections and participate in the pathogenesis of non-infectious inflammatory diseases and cancer. Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cells found in the blood. Their quantitative changes, detected in CBC results, can have a dramatic impact on the immune function of the body. Effective interpretation of these cell count changes, in conjunction with other CBC data, can help suspect a disease, evaluate its course, and differentiate it from other diseases. Knowledge of possible etiologies of neutrophilia and neutropenia and adherence to diagnostic algorithms Summary Benas Matuzevičius, Gabrielė Jonauskaitė, Rėda Matuzevičienė INTERPRETATION OF CHANGES IN LEUKOCYTE PARAMETERS IN COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT: NEUTROPHILIA AND NEUTROPENIA can lead to a smoother diagnostic and treatment process.

Aim of the study. To conduct a literature analysis and provide the main causes of neutrophil count changes and develop diagnostic algorithms to differentiate various diseases that cause neutrophilia or neutropenia.

Material and Methods. A literature review was conducted using the free search method and several databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and ResearchGate, by entering keywords: neutrophilia, neutropenia, etiology, diagnosis, pathology. A total of 60 relevant studies were selected to meet the research objectives. Neither a predefined search period nor inclusion protocol were applied to this study.

Conclusions. Based on the literature analysis conducted, diagnostic algorithms have been developed helping the physician correctly identify conditions which present with changes in the neutrophil count. It is also important to take into account each patient's history and clinical examination data when further referring the patient for additional tests or specialist consultations. Diagnostic algorithms encourage the use of effective and cost-effective methods for diagnosing the disease, assessing disease dynamics, and planning treatment, thereby reducing the harm of unnecessary tests and expediting the diagnosis of diseases.
