Summary
Background. There is a lack of research that investigate the relationship between platelet membrane FA composition and biochemical markers. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of biochemical markers for changes in platelet membrane FA composition of healthy and post-myocardial infarction (post-MI) individuals.
Material and methods. This study involved 78 healthy and 19 men after MI. FAs of platelet phospholipid membrane were identified by thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. Concentrations of biochemical markers in blood serum were determined by routine methods of clinical chemistry analysis.
Results. Concentrations of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were higher in healthy men (p = 0.0003; p = 0.002; p = 0.005), while levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), glucose (GLU), and triacylglycerols (TAG) were lower (p = 0.001; p = 0.00009; p = 0.04). Levels of C18:1ω-7, C20:4ω-6, C20:5ω-3, C22:6ω-3 were higher in post-MI men (p = 0.033, p = 0.011, p = 0.0007, p = 0.021). A tendency was observed: when the level of C20:1ω-9 increases in platelet membrane, CRP and TAG concentrations decrease in blood serum.
Conclusions. Increased concentration of blood serum biochemical markers (i. e., CRB, TAG, GLU) and elevated level of polyunsaturated FAs in platelet phospholipid membrane of post-MI individuals might influence the development and further progression of atherosclerosis.
