In the latter years interest in vitamin D has grown: various studies and articles were written on this subject. Even though vitamin D importance for metabolism and structure of bone tissue is well-known recent studies have revealed even greater significance for human body. It was proven that vitamin D is important for most human body tissues (36 human body tissues were found to have receptors that are sensitive to vitamin D including brain, lung, thyroid, heart muscle, pancreatic p cells, immunity system cells) and can influence different processes happening in human organism.

Background. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in pediatric population is high around the world. However, there are no official data about vitamin D levels among the children in Lithuania.

Material and methods. Retrospective analysis of vitamin D (25-hydroxycholecalciferol) levels in the blood serum of 1354 children, hospitalized in Children’s Hospital, Affiliate of VULSK between the year 2011 and 2015. Children were classified into two groups: group I - children under 2 years, group II - over 2 years.
