Summary

Aim of the study. To analyse the spectrum of pathogens causing secondary peritonitis and their resistance to antimicrobial drugs in Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics inpatient departments.

Object and methods of the study. All patients of the study received treatment for secondary bacterial or fungal peritonitis in Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics in 2019. Microorganisms were identified using MALDI-TOF MS system. Drug resistance of the pathogens was evaluated using disk diffusion method. Statistical analysis of the patients’ data was performed with the system IMB SPPS Statistics v20.0.

Results. Analysis of 138 secondary peritonitis cases was performed. 51.6% (n=126) of pathogens were Enterobacterales, 20.2% (n=49) were Enterococcus spp., 8.2% (n=20) Bacteroides spp., 6.6% (n=16) Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 5.3% (n=13) were Candida spp. Vancomycin-resistant were 67.9% (n=19) of E. faecium and 5.0% (n=1) of E. faecalis isolates. Two or more strains were identified in almost half of evaluated microbiological cultures.

Conclusions. 80% of isolated microorganisms causing secondary peritonitis belonged to normal intestinal flora: K. pneumoniae and E. faecium strains were most often found to be multidrug-resistant. In almost half of analysed cases two or more pathogens were detected.
