Summary

Background. Fats are extremely important organic substances as they are a part in the composition of almost every cell in the human body. What is more, fats are important for the body's energy metabolism processes. As life expectancy increases, age-related neurological diseases are becoming more common. Progressive neuronal damage leads to cognitive and behavioral impairments, as well as movement problems such as ataxia or paralysis. The main neurodegenerative diseases in the population are Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. Individuals with these diseases experience a significant reduction in quality of life and require constant care. Therefore, in order to improve the outcome of these diseases, it is important to take into account not only their treatment, but also prevention.

Conclusions. Fatty acids are important for maintaining the physiological functions of nerve cells. Increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids may be an effective way to prevent and treat neurodegenerative disorders.
