Introduction. CA 19-9 (carbohydrate antigen 19-9) is a marker of pancreatic cancer but it also might be a secondary marker of gall bladder, coton and stomach cancer or hepatic metastases. CA 19-9 value might been targed in active hepatitis, pancreatitis, gall bladder and bile ducts diseases.
The aim of the research Analyze and assess cancer marker CA 19-9 prognostic value in digestive system diseases.
Methods. A retrospective analysis of 257 patients’ clinical data was made. The research includes patients which had the laboratory test of CA 19-9 done for them. Durtng the analysis we assessed demographics, laboratory tests and diagnoses. Statistical analysis performed by using STATA 13 and MS Excel 2010.
Results. Analysis group consisted of 257 patients treated in VULSK: 141 men (54.86%) and 116 women (45.14%). Mean age - 64.53±15.39 years (22-93). Patients with oncological diseases - 72 (28.02%); non-oncological diseases - with oncological diseases - 453.18±222.24 kU/L; non-oncological diseases - 80.54±54.51 kU/L (p=0.045). In analysis group CA 19-9 marker had 65% sensitivity for oncological disease when the normal value is 37 kU/L or less, specifictty was 75% (p=0.0056). 48% cases of acute pancreatitis or exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis had CA 19-9 marker greater than 37 kU/L.
Conclusion. The largest part of patients of analysis group were elderly, men suffered from digestive system diseases more often than women. CA 19-9 marker value in patients with oncological diseases group was statistically significantly higher than in patients with non-oncological diseases group. The normal CA 19-9 value usually let us reject oncological process, on the other hand enlarged value of CA 19-9 not always confirms the oncological disease. For this reason, CA 19-9 marker might not be the only indicator confirming diagnosis.
