Summary

Aim. To evaluate the signs of sperm quality in different age groups.

Material and methods. The sperm samples of 239 males were examined and evaluated. Sperm samples were collected by masturbation with 3–5 days of sexual abstinence. Semen sam ples were stored at room temperature and analysed within 30–60 minutes after semen liquefaction. Statistical data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ( Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 20.

Results. The men in the study ranged in age from 22 to 50 years. Male were divided into three age groups: 21–30, 31–40, and 41–50 years. Sperm volume, sperm concentration, motility, and non-progressive sperm count did not show statistically significant differences between groups of male age. The most progressive spermatozoa were found in the youngest group of male. With increasing age, less progressive spermatozoa were detected, 34 (20.7–44.5)%, 27 (17.2–43.7)% and 18 (10.0–47.0)%, respectively, p=0.02. Mean while, the number of immotile spermatozoa in creased with age, 38.5 (31.0–52.0)%, 45.5 (31.2–56.7)%, and 49.0 (38.0–65.0)%, respectively, p<0.05.

Conclusions. The number of progressive and immotile spermatozoa decreases with the male age. Sperm concentration, sperm volume, and total sperm motility did not statistically significant differences in male age groups.
