Summary
Background. Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality world - wide. The aim of this study was to review the epidemiology of atherosclerosis and eval u ate the level of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipopro tein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), glucose in a group of young adults and assess their potential impact on the atherogenesis process aswell as compare with those markers in different people groups.
Frederikson’s classification of dyslipoproteinemias is based on clinical features and electrophoretic or ultracentrifugal pattern of lipoprotein fractions. It was recognized as the international standard of dyslipoproteinemia classification in 1972 by the World Health Organization. Type I dyslipoproteinemia is represented by three rare genetic disorders, i.e., familial lipoprotein lipase deficiency, familial apolipoprotein C-II deficiency and lipoprotein lipase deficiency due to familial inhibitor of lipoprotein lipase, which are inherited in autosomal recessive pattern.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the predomnant cause of morbidty and mortality in the world mainly because of atherosclerosis, which is determined by several factors, including plasma lipoproteins. The most import ant are low-density lipoproteins, which stimulate retention of cholesterol in artery wall, and high-density lipoproteins, which have an antiaterogenic effect.
