Summary
Background. Purpose of the study was to evaluate the new biomarker of atherosclerosis, cyclophilin A, it's relevance to diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases while taking into account traditional atherosclerosis risk factors, and assess relationship of this protein to markers of platelet hyperreactivity.
Material and methods. Study included three groups: control (n=42), risk (n=160) and event (n=64). Acceptance criteria for risk group were: smoking, stress, overweight, disturbances in lipids profile, absence of acute cardiovascular disease, male. Acceptance criteria for event group were: individuals with diagnosed acute cardiovascular illness and increased troponin I concentration.
Results. Statistically significant fibrinogen and von Willebrand factor differences were detected between control and risk groups (p<0.001 and p=0.001 respectively). Platelet aggregation with thrombin receptors activating peptide did not difter. Cyclophilin A concentration differences between control and risk groups were statistically significant (p<0.001), values being higher in control group were noticed only in s/co units (p<0.001). Comparing risk and event groups cyclophilin A results significance value was also acceptable (p<0.001). Differences of traditional atherosclerosis risk factors (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, CRP and glucose) were significant between three groups, p value being <0.001 in most cases, but always <0.05.
Conclusions. Relevance of cyclophilin A to diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases was not proven. Protein in question was not associated with platelet hyperreactivity in patients with risk factors. Cyclophilin A represents severity of acute illness and may be regarded as consequence of the event but not the cause. Results of traditional atherosclerosis biomarkers confirm important contribution of lipids metabolism to pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
