The management of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors is still one of the main objectives in preventing coronary heart disease. The EUROASPIRE IV (European Action on Secondary and Primary Prevention by Intervention to Reduce Events IV) cross sectional survey were carried out to estimate the prevalence of the main risk factors in European countries and evaluate the implementation of evidence based guidelines on secondary cardiovascular prevention. According to the data collected in EUROASPIRE IV, Lithuania is classified as a country where the prevalence of dyslipidaemia (79.0% in comparison with the average rate in Europe - 59.8%), hypertension (57.8% vs. 42.7%), obesity (45% vs. 37.6%) and smoking (18.0% vs. 16.0%) is one of the highest among other European countries. Meanwhile the frequency of diabetes (18.6% in Lithuania vs. 26.8% in Europe) among Lithuanian participants is one of the lowest in Europe. However, even the fact that Lithuania is the leading country by the prevalence of dyslipidaemia, it is observed that the usage rate of statins in Lithuania is the lowest (73.5%, while the average rate in Europe is 85.7%). In summary, the results of EUROASPIRE IV have demonstrated that cardiovascular prevention strategies remain insufficiently effective in order to reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors.
